Medical conditions we treat

Posted by Margaret Donohue on February 12, 2014 at 9:15 AM

All of the people in my clinical practice have some underlying medical or neurological disorder. Finding out about those issues starts with the first phone call. Most people with anxiety and depression will significantly improve by using an evidence-based treatment. So if someone has had an evidence-based treatment (CBT, Mindfulness, ACT etc.) and has not responded to treatment then some underlying condition may be involved. Here are all the things I screen for in looking for a medical condition that is likely to improve when psychological services are added:

• Depression or anxiety that is not responsive to an evidence-based treatment

• Any medical symptoms without a diagnosis

• Atypical weight gain or weight loss that isn’t significantly responsive to diet changes or exercise

• Chronic, unexplained fatigue

• Low grade chronic fever

• Head injury

• Anyone told their medical symptoms are “functional” and not objective

• Anyone with a history of physical trauma

• Confusion and memory loss

• Atypical headache or headache without effective treatment

• Heart disease

• Cancer

• Endocrine disorders

• Autistic Spectrum disorders

• Learning disorders

• ADD/ADHD/Organizationally challenged

• Borderline Personality Disorder/Bipolar Spectrum disorder

• Disability Assistance: Assessment of functional impairment, second opinion, and disability accommodation for school, employment and home

• Anyone not improving on a standard treatment for a medical condition
