Crowdfunding allows companies or individuals with products or ideas to ask for money to put their products or ideas into production.

Kickstarter 

http://www.kickstarter.com This site lets you help to fund new products or new companies as they get started. You give the site a credit card number or pay through paypal and once they are funded they send you what you have agreed to pay for.  There are lots in music, art, food, technology, and just great stuff available before it comes out to the general market.  If the site doesn't reach it's funding goals you aren't charged and the people go back to whatever they were doing before they posted their request.

This site allows you to post a medical case or solve a medical case.  If you've been sick for a long time and have lots of medical data but no diagnosis this site might help you get one.  If you have a lot of medical knowledge you can help make a diagnosis of an unsolved medical case.  Check out the site.  The life you save might be yours.

http://www.indiegogo.com  Crowdfunding on an international scale.  Not just bibles and schools to poor countries or funding a child for a year, this is clean water, building houses, and improving the lives of people in other countries or other areas here.  If you want that transgender surgery, you can post it.

FundersClub, Wefunder, and Angellist

Some like Angellist seem more interested in technology.  Some won't let you look at the companies until you join their site like wefunder.
